Mitte
— Synopsis
Art in an extreme environment: a light that only exists because people carried it up a mountain together.
From July to October 2022, the light installation MITTE glowed daily on the 2,907 m summit of Piz Uter above Zuoz — in a gentle ten-second pulse from 8 to 11 pm and from 5 to 7 am, timed with the wellbeing of local wildlife in mind.
Installation took two intense days and nights with a seven-person team mobilised through social media. All the equipment was carried collectively up 1,200 metres of ascent to the summit, supported by Alp Arpiglia. On 8 October a new team of seven carried the installation back down to the valley.
MITTE is more than a light installation: it stands for collective effort, community and art in an extreme environment.
Light body 130 cm in diameter (transparent paper, papier-mâché, epoxy resin, fibreglass), 700 addressable LEDs, Arduino, solar panel and two car batteries.
